Start your Vienna itinerary by immersing yourself in the charm of the inner city. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation and get familiar with Vienna’s efficient transport system. The metro, trams, and buses are perfectly synchronized to ensure minimal waiting times, and the city center is wonderfully walkable while retaining a sense of grandeur due to its stunning architecture.

Begin your exploration at the Hofburg Palace, where the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library) awaits. This library feels like something out of a historical movie, with its ornate baroque details and vast collection of books. Be sure to buy your tickets in advance for a hassle-free visit. Spend about an hour here, soaking in the history and snapping some Instagram-worthy photos.

As you wander through the city center, don’t miss iconic landmarks like St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) and Karlskirche. St. Stephen’s Cathedral, with its stunning Gothic architecture and colorful tiled roof, is a must-visit. Meanwhile, Karlskirche offers an impressive blend of baroque style and serene surroundings. Highlights include dinosaur skeletons, exhibits on evolution, and an extensive collection of minerals and gemstones. If natural history isn’t your thing, consider the Kunsthistorisches Museum instead. This art museum not only houses world-class masterpieces but also features one of the most beautiful museum cafés in the world!

In the afternoon, take a leisurely turn by visiting the Schlumberger Kellerwelten, Vienna’s oldest sparkling wine cellar. This unique experience includes an engaging audio-guided tour through the atmospheric cellars, a glimpse into the production process, and, of course, a tasting session of exquisite sparkling wines. Even if you’re not typically a fan of bubbly, this visit might surprise you – it certainly left a lasting impression on us! Rudy’s distaste for sparkling wines surely took a hit that day, as he continues to ask me to buy them to drink at home. The cellar’s intimate ambiance and fascinating history make it a highlight of the trip.

Day three takes you to one of the top things to do in Vienna: Schönbrunn Palace. This iconic site, once the summer residence of the Habsburgs, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Book your tickets in advance to avoid long queues and arrive early to make the most of your visit. Start with a tour of the opulent palace interiors, which offer a window into imperial life. Then, spend time exploring the extensive palace gardens. With their manicured lawns, intricate fountains, and stunning views of the palace, the gardens are a photographer’s dream.

In the afternoon, head to Mariahilfer Straße, Vienna’s longest shopping street. This bustling area offers a wide variety of stores, from international brands to local boutiques, as well as cozy cafés where you can take a break. This is the time to eat one more of the delicious cakes that Vienna is renowned for, enjoy it while you can! If shopping isn’t your thing, consider spending more time at Schönbrunn Palace to fully immerse yourself in its rich history and attractions. If you have the extra time, consider visiting the Schönbrunn Zoo, one of the oldest in the world, or climb up to the Gloriette for panoramic views of the estate.

Top tip: If you’re visiting during spring or summer and suffer from hay fever, don’t forget to bring allergy medication – the lush greenery can be a trigger. I didn’t and continued the rest of the trip having horrible breathing problems and fever, so don’t make the same mistake I did.

Your final day in this Vienna itinerary is dedicated to art and music, two pillars of the city’s cultural heritage. Start with a visit to Schloss Belvedere, a magnificent baroque palace complex. The Upper Belvedere is home to an impressive collection of classical art, including Gustav Klimt’s iconic The Kiss. The Lower Belvedere, on the other hand, features contemporary art exhibitions.
