Discover the Perfect One-Week Malta Itinerary

Malta, with its rich history, stunning coastlines, and warm Mediterranean charm, is an ideal destination for mid-budget travelers seeking a mix of island vibes, hiking, and picturesque old cities. Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, hiking along rugged cliffs, or relaxing on a catamaran, this Malta itinerary offers something for everyone. Designed for couples or friends, this plan maximizes your week on the islands with unforgettable experiences.

Start of our Malta itinerary: arrive in Mellieha

After arriving in Malta (I arrived in the late afternoon), make your way to Mellieha, a quaint village on the western side of the island and your base for the first half of your Malta itinerary. Malta’s public transportation system is efficient and affordable, making it easy to get around. Purchase a 7-day Tallinja card for unlimited bus travel, I remember it being around €25 per person.

Check into the Maritim Antonine Hotel, a standout accommodation for several reasons. Its location is incredibly convenient, with bus stops right outside, making it a perfect base for exploring the island. Start your day with breakfast in the hotel’s lush garden, setting a peaceful tone for your day. Don’t miss the rooftop pool, which offers spectacular views of Mellieha — a perfect spot to unwind after a day of travel. Take this evening to settle in, enjoy a relaxing dinner, and prepare for your adventures ahead.

A cute door on the first hike of this Malta itinerary: the hike in tht Ghasri valley

Day 1: Hiking the Ghasri Valley in Gozo

Begin your Maltese adventure with a ferry ride to Gozo, Malta’s picturesque sister island. From the ferry terminal, a quick bus ride will take you to Victoria, the island’s capital. Stock up on essentials like water, sunscreen, and snacks before embarking on a scenic 13km hike through the stunning Ghasri Valley. Don’t forget to try a pastizzi from a local vendor and stock up on some energy.

The trail winds through dramatic cliffs and verdant landscapes, culminating at Wied il-Ghasri, a secluded inlet perfect for a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters. From there, continue along the coastline to the salt pans near Marsalforn, a unique site where salt has been harvested for centuries. The views of the waves crashing against the rocky shore add a dramatic touch to your hike. Return to Victoria by foot to conclude the 13km hike or go back by bus and enjoy a relaxed evening in Mellieha.

Tip: Don’t forget your swimming gear and a small towel if you want to enjoy a dip in the clear waters of Wied il-Ghasri. The water was so inviting, but because we forgot, we could only go in up till the upper legs. Also, don’t underestimate the heat in shoulder season. The hike offers little shade and the first café you’ll find is close to Marsalforn on the beach.

Day 2: Exploring Victoria and Ramla Beach

Return to Gozo for a blend of culture and relaxation. If you’re not afraid to change hotels too much, staying in Gozo for the first 2 nights of this Malta itinerary is also an option. The available hotels are scarse though, which made me decide to stay in Mellieha instead. Start your day at the Citadel in Victoria, an imposing fortress offering panoramic views of the island. Wander through its cobblestone streets, explore the historic buildings, and learn about Gozo’s rich history at the visitor center. Don’t miss the hidden alleys filled with charming surprises.

In the afternoon, head to Ramla Beach, renowned for its unique golden-orange sands and clear waters. This expansive beach is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, offering a tranquil escape from the busier tourist spots. For a more adventurous twist, take a short but rewarding hike to Tal-Mixta Cave, perched above the beach. The trail to the cave is manageable for most fitness levels and provides stunning views of the coastline along the way.

Getting to the cave…

Follow the beach to the east until you reach the border, there you’ll see a path winding up. Depending on the season in which you visit, lush vegetation might hide the pathway a bit more out of sight. In summer or autumn you’ll find less greenery, but amazing views on your way none the less.

Once at the cave, you’ll be greeted by one of the most breathtaking views in Gozo. The natural frame of the cave’s opening perfectly captures Ramla Beach below, creating an idyllic scene for photography. The cave’s interior, with its rugged rock formations, is cool and shaded, making it an ideal spot to rest and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. We found ourselves in the company of a cute cat, while taking some pictures. After your hike, return to Ramla Beach for a refreshing swim or relax on the sand before heading back to Mellieha for the night.

Day 3: Western Malta’s Hidden Gems

Today, focus on the natural beauty of Malta’s western coast. Begin your day at Għajn Tuffieħa Bay, a quieter and more serene alternative to Golden Bay. Take the scenic steps down to the beachan embark on a hike to Il-Qarraba. This majestic landmark is a dramatic limestone promontory jutting out into the sea. Find the trail by instantly going back up the hill that goes behind the beach.

The trail to Il-Qarraba leads you along the clay cliffs, where you’ll find stunning views of the rugged coastline and turquoise waters below. As you approach Il-Qarraba, the path becomes more challenging, requiring some rock climbing to navigate. But the effort is well worth it—this area offers secluded swimming spots that are perfect for a peaceful dip. The tranquility here is unmatched, as the area feels like a hidden paradise. You’ll often spot yachts anchored nearby, adding to the serene atmosphere. The waters are crystal clear, making it a prime location for snorkeling or simply floating in the calm sea. Spend time soaking in the natural beauty before making your way back to Għajn Tuffieħa Bay.

In the afternoon, visit the Coral Lagoon, a spectacular natural sea cave with a dramatic skylight. While swimming in the lagoon can be dangerous due to currents, the view from above is awe-inspiring. If conditions are favorable, consider booking a kayak tour for a safe and up-close experience. End your day back in Mellieha, enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. (We really enjoyed Tal-Puzzu!)

Day 4: Sailing to Comino and the Blue Lagoon

Head to St. Paul’s Bay and board a catamaran with Sea Adventure, a company known for offering exceptional value and a less crowded experience. I personally found this tour to be way better than the crowed boats we saw leave Valetta. As it’s closer to the destination, you also have less travel time. Spend the day exploring the stunning waters around Comino, including the famous Blue Lagoon. The trip features stops at some of the best snorkeling spots, with vibrant underwater life and small caves that create magical lighting for photography.

One of the highlights is a distant view of Popeye Village from the sea, allowing for great photo opportunities without the need to visit. The boat trip is perfectly paced, leaving you wishing it could last longer. After this unforgettable day on the water, either return to Mellieha or proceed to Valletta. In Valletta, check into 115 The Strand by the Neu Collective, a boutique hotel with a fantastic location near the harbor and dining options. Enjoy breakfast on the rooftop terrace with panoramic waterfront views and relax at Aqualuna, a chic pool lounge across the street.

Day 5: Exploring Mdina and Surroundings

Spend your day in Mdina, Malta’s historic “Silent City.” This medieval gem is perfect for wandering cobblestone streets, marveling at ancient architecture, and enjoying the serene ambiance. Key landmarks include St. Paul’s Cathedral and the iconic light blue door adorned with pink flowers—a favorite spot for photos. In this city that was the former capital of Malta, parts of Game of Thrones were filmed in the winding streets of limestone.

For a sweet treat, visit Fontanella Tea Garden, renowned for its cakes and spectacular views from the terrace. Getting a spot can be a bit of a wait, but I assure you it’s totally worth it. Depending on your base, you can spend your afternoon lounging poolside in Valletta or strolling along St. Paul’s Bay. If you’re feeling adventurous, try windsurfing at Mellieha Beach for an exhilarating experience.

Day 6: Exploring Southeastern Malta

Today, delve into Malta’s southeastern treasures. Begin at the Ħaġar Qim Temples, a prehistoric site steeped in mystery and history. Pair this with a visit to the Blue Grotto viewpoint for stunning ocean views. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a boat tour to explore the grotto’s vibrant marine life.

Alternatively, consider the Hypogeum and Tarxien Temples, which offer a fascinating glimpse into Malta’s ancient past. These UNESCO sites are slightly more expensive but provide a memorable experience. Finish your day in Marsaxlokk, a fishing village famous for its colorful luzzus (boats) and seafood restaurants. While charming, it can feel overly touristy, so returning to Valletta early to explore more of the capital might be a better use of time.

Day 7: Discovering Valletta and the Three Cities

End your week-long Malta itinerary with a deep dive into Valletta, the island’s vibrant capital. Begin at the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where you can watch the noon cannon salute and enjoy sweeping views of the Grand Harbor. Visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral, a Baroque masterpiece with gilded interiors and stunning artworks, including Caravaggio’s famous painting.

Take your time wandering the old streets, stopping at the Grand Master’s Palace, and soaking up the charm of this historic city. In the afternoon, take a short ferry ride to the Three Cities—Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. Each offers its own unique charm, with quiet streets, historic architecture, and cozy cafes perfect for a relaxing end to your trip.
