It’s the ideal base for travelers, with most of the island’s key sights and activities accessible within an hour’s drive. Whether you’re planning an action-packed adventure or a laid-back retreat, Funchal has something for everyone.

We chose to stay at the Turim Santa Maria Hotel, a centrally located option with private parking – perfect for those renting a car. Situated near many of the city’s top attractions, restaurants, and cultural landmarks, this hotel made it easy to explore. For those who prefer not to drive, Funchal is also the departure point for most tours and excursions around the island. And if relaxation is what you’re after, the city’s excellent resorts offer a luxurious retreat.

But what makes Funchal truly special? Let’s dive into the top Funchal must-sees and uncover everything this vibrant city has to offer.

The bustling Mercado dos Lavradores, or Farmers’ Market, is one of the most iconic Funchal must-sees and a feast for the senses. Located in Funchal’s historic Old Town, this market is renowned for its vibrant displays of fresh fruits, flowers, and seafood. You’ve likely seen photos of its colorful produce stacks on Instagram, and the market certainly lives up to the hype.

The market is divided into sections, each offering something unique. On the ground floor, you’ll find a fresh fish market where local fishermen sell their catch of the day. From black scabbardfish to tuna, it’s a fascinating glimpse into Madeira’s fishing traditions. Nearby, the flower vendors showcase beautiful native blooms, while another section is dedicated to artisan goods like leather products and handwoven items.

Head upstairs to the fruit stalls, where merchants encourage you to sample exotic produce grown on the island. From passionfruit in surprising flavors like pineapple and banana to custard apples and pitangas, the variety is astounding. Be cautious about prices, though, as some stalls target tourists with high markups. Ask for the cost upfront to ensure a fair deal.

Even if you don’t buy anything, visiting the Farmers’ Market is an excellent way to immerse yourself in Funchal’s lively atmosphere and learn about Madeira’s agricultural treasures.

2. Monte Palace Gardens and Cable Cars

Another unmissable experience in Funchal is the journey to the stunning Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. Begin your adventure with a scenic ride on the cable cars, which whisk you from Funchal’s waterfront to Monte, offering panoramic views of the city, coastline, and lush green hills. The ride alone is a highlight, giving you a bird’s-eye view of Funchal’s beauty.

Once you arrive, the Monte Palace Gardens invite you to explore their sprawling grounds, filled with native and exotic plants, tranquil koi ponds, and artistic sculptures. The lower section of the gardens features serene Japanese gardens framed by breathtaking sea views.

The gardens also house a unique gemstone museum, showcasing precious stones from around the world. Admission includes a sample of Poncha, Madeira’s traditional sugarcane liquor—a sweet bonus to your visit.

For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, descend from Monte via the famous Carreiros do Monte wicker sledges. This tradition dates back over 100 years, offering a thrilling ride down the steep streets of Monte in large woven baskets steered by two men. Using only their rubber-soled shoes to brake, the carreiros guide the sledges at speeds that make the ride as exhilarating as it is unforgettable.

Keep in mind that the sledges don’t take you all the way back to central Funchal, so you’ll need to walk or take a taxi for the final stretch. Despite this, the wicker sledge ride is a quintessential Funchal must-see, combining tradition, excitement, and charm.

4. Dolphin and Whale Watching

No list of Funchal must-sees would be complete without mentioning a dolphin-watching tour. The waters around Madeira are home to diverse marine life, including dolphins, whales, and even the occasional sea turtle.

At the port of Funchal, you’ll find numerous operators offering excursions. We chose VMT Madeira, a company known for its sustainable approach to wildlife tourism. They use spacious catamarans, which are quieter and more eco-friendly than traditional motorboats. The experience was unforgettable—we spotted dolphins swimming alongside the boat, a pod of whales in the distance, and even a shark!

If you don’t spot any marine life on your tour, VMT Madeira offers a free second trip, ensuring you get the chance to see these incredible creatures. Pro tip: If you’re prone to seasickness, take precautions beforehand to fully enjoy the journey. Unfortunately we didn’t and Rudy only saw the back of his own eyelids.

Just a short drive from Funchal lies Camara de Lobos, a charming fishing village that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook. Known for its colorful boats, cobblestone streets, and fresh seafood, this picturesque town is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a romantic evening meal. Though we didn’t have time to visit during our trip, this quaint village is a must-see for those looking to experience Madeira’s traditional culture and slower pace of life.

Beyond its famous attractions, Funchal is full of surprises waiting to be discovered. Wander through its historic streets to find beautiful old churches, like the 15th-century Funchal Cathedral, or visit the Madeira Wine Lodge for a tasting of the island’s iconic fortified wine. For foodies, Funchal offers a vibrant culinary scene. We loved Prima Caju, a trendy brunch spot known for its delicious dishes and stylish decor. Don’t forget to try Espetada (grilled meat skewers) or fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants.

Funchal may be a small city, but it’s packed with charm, culture, and activities that cater to every traveler. Whether you’re admiring the views from the Monte cable car, shopping at the Farmers’ Market, or spotting dolphins on a catamaran, the city offers unforgettable experiences at every turn. With so many incredible Funchal must-sees, it’s no wonder this vibrant capital is the heart of Madeira.
